WARSAW, Aug 1 (AFP) - Floodwaters continued to move slowly northward in Poland on Wednesday although the situation in the southeast, where floods and storms have claimed 30 lives, began to improve, media reports said.

A 100-kilometer (62-mile) long wave of floodwater on the Vistula river was due to arrive later Wednesday at Wroclawek dam, 120 kilometers northwest of Warsaw.

The reservoir should partially absorb the floodwaters, reducing the risk of flooding further north, officials said.

In the southeast the water levels of the Vistula have begun to drop, but the authorities are maintaining on alert.

The army blew a hole in a dyke near Braciejowice, 140 kilometers southeast of Warsaw, after water levels in the Vistula fell below those of surrounding fields and villages it was protecting.

Damage from the floods, which have inundated dozens of villages, could reach three billion zlotys (810 million euros, 710 million dollars), according to official estimates.

The government said Tuesday it will release 800 million zlotys in aid to rebuild damaged property.

The European Union in on Tuesday also announced 15 million euros in assistance.
